Marmara University Republic Museum and Art Gallery

Marmara University Republic Museum and Art Gallery

When I entered the museum, I was expecting a museum where artifacts related to the Republic were exhibited. But there are short-term exhibitions in the museum building. We can say that it is used as an exhibition hall and art gallery.

In addition to temporary exhibitions, there is also İhap Hulusi Görey‘s permanent gallery, which was added to the museum in 2010. İhap Hulusi Görey was Turkey’s first graphic designer. Görey, one of the great names of Turkish advertising, made his first poster design order for İnci Toothpaste Company. We all know him through a book cover. In 1932, he designed the cover of the Alphabet book upon Atatürk’s order.

İhap Hulusi is also the person who designed the label of the drink Club Raki, the logo of Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi and the packaging of Birinci cigarettes. You can see many of his works in the İhap Hulusi Görey Gallery on the ground floor of the Republic Museum.

In my 50 years of working life, I have naturally experienced many difficulties, but despite these difficulties, I am pleased and fortunate as a painter who brought the first color poster painting to Turkey. – İhap Hulusi
